Obituary

Winona Ann "Nonie" Deckard, 76, Valley Falls, died Friday, Dec. 31, 2010, at Topeka.
She was born on July 24, 1934, in the Swabville community, northwest of Valley Falls, the daughter of Roy F. and Gladys Ferrell Deckard. She graduated from Valley Falls High School in 1952.
Nonie worked for Jefferson County Home Health Care for 20 years. She had also been a nurse's aide at the Horton and Holton Hospitals and had farmed and raised livestock on the family farm. After her retirement she was a transport driver for Jefferson County Senior Citizens.
Nonie was a member of the Coal Creek United Methodist Church, the Live and Learn Home Demonstration Unit and, along with her mother, was a charter member of the United Farm Wives.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Melvern Deckard, and four sisters, Wilma Brandt, Margaret Smith, Anita Deckard and Evadina Deckard.
Survivors include three nephews, Wayne Smith, Amarillo, TX, Bill Brandt, San Ramon, CA, and Greg Brandt, Ellison Bay, WI; three nieces, Patricia Smith, Fort Lauderdale, FL, Jan Thomas, Eagle, CO, and Camille Schoettlin, Topeka; many great-nephews and great-nieces and a great-great-niece.
The funeral service will be at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011, at the Coal Creek United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at the Valley Falls Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church from 10:30 a.m. until service time. Memorial contributions may be made to the Coal Creek United Methodist Church or to Jefferson County Friends of Hospice and sent in care of Mercer Funeral Home, PO Box 6, Valley Falls, KS 66088.
