Obituary

Walter Joe Sayers, Sr., 84, Valley Falls, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at his home. He had battled cancer for seven months.

He was born on March 12, 1929, at Kansas City, KS, the youngest of five children of Aerial Everett "Joe" and Katie Metzger Sayers. He was a corporal in the US Army and served during the Korean Conflict.

Walt retired in 1982 from the CertainTeed Corporation in Kansas City, KS, where he was a storeroom attendant in the maintenance department. He had also worked at several furnace companies in Kansas City. He was a member of the Grahem-Herbers Post 3084, Veterans of Foreign Wars in Valley Falls. He was a member of the Valley Falls United Methodist Church where he had been baptized on Sept. 9, 2012.

He married Lucille Moore VanHoozier on Nov. 12, 1952 at Pocahontas, AR. Walt was a loving and devoted husband. He and Lucy celebrated their 60th anniversary this past November. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Debbie Phillips; a brother, Joe Sayers, and two sisters, Eva Cayhill, and Helen Brillhart.

Survivors include his wife, Lucy, of the home; three sons, Larry Sasse, Waco, TX, Daniel (Sheri) VanHoozier, Valley Falls, Joe Jr. (Angela) Sayers, Valley Falls; two daughters, Victoria (Dave) Jones, Leavenworth, Paula (Roger) Dill, Lansing; a sister, Catherine Brown, Winslow, AZ; 15 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

Walt loved God and his country, his family, fishing, hunting and gardening. He shared that love with his family. He was an avid supporter of the 2nd Amendment and a member of the NRA. He was a wonderful man and loved dearly by his family. He will be missed greatly until we meet again.

The funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 10, 2013, at Mercer Funeral Home in Valley Falls. Burial with military honors by Grahem-Herbers Post 3084, V.F.W. will be at the Valley Falls Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday.
