Vera Leora Welborn, 96, Winchester, formerly of Valley Falls, died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2014, at the F.W. Huston Senior Living Center, in Winchester.

She was born Feb. 7, 1918, at Valley Falls, the daughter of James Alexander and Edna Sara Towler Meredith. She graduated from Valley Falls High School and taught rural schools in the North Cedar and Nortonville communities.

Vera worked at Slimaker Dress Factory in Holton and then worked for the State of Kansas in Topeka. She was a member of the Valley Falls Christian Church, the YW Club, the For-Get-Me-Not Club, and the Sunshine Club.

Vera enjoyed cooking, gardening, and taking care of children, especially her grandchildren.

She married Jesse James Welborn May 9, 1942, at Holton. He died Sept. 11, 1995. She was also preceded in death by a daughter in infancy, Leisa Fae Welborn, on Sept. 4, 1960; a brother, Orval Meredith; and a sister, Iola Armstead.

Survivors include four sons, Jay (Carol) Welborn, Winchester, Jim (Sherry) Welborn, Topeka, Roger (Brenda) Welborn, Coweta, OK, Larry (Lee) Welborn, Valley Falls; a daughter, Sara (John) Banks, Muscotah; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be at 10:00 am Monday, Sept. 15, 2014, at the Valley Falls Christian Church. Burial will follow at the Valley Falls Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2:00-4:00 pm Sunday, at Mercer Funeral Home in Valley Falls.
