Obituary

Suzanne G. Wedemeier, 62, of Holton, KS, passed away Saturday, October 28, 2023 at KU Medical Center in Kansas City, KS with her brother by her side. She was born March 22, 1961 in Oelwein, IA, the daughter of Allan F. and Sharon D. (Ramsay) Wedemeier.

Suzanne graduated from West Central High School in Maynard, IA in 1979. She was an accomplished softball player, and star pitcher in high school, amassing more than 140 victories. After high school , she attended Iowa State University, where she set MANY records as a softball pitcher, to this day holding many records, over 40 years later. Suzanne made lifelong, incredibly loyal and steadfast friends on her team while playing for ISU. They were truly her second family. She later completed her Bachelor's Degree from Upper Iowa University, but was always true to Iowa State.

After graduating from college, Suzanne taught English at Valley Falls High School for many years, bringing lasting impact, support and acceptance to many students, who remained dear to her heart always. She led the yearbook staff for many years as well.

Suzanne is survived by her mother, Sharon Wedemeier of Fayette, IA; brother, David Wedemeier (Judi) of Tucson, AZ; nephew, Jonathan Wedemeier (Becca) of Gilbert, AZ; 3 nieces, Kaela Wedemeier of Chicago, IL and Madison and Evelyn Wedemeier both of Tucson, AZ. Suzanne's love of her animals was her sanctuary, and they were a constant source  of support, love and companionship for her. She is survived by her sweet dog, Sam, as well as her cats, Keegan and Rory.

She was preceded in death by her father, Allan F. Wedemeier, who caught innumerable pitches in the backyard while she honed her craft.

Suzanne was not one for funerals or burials. In honor of her wishes, on Sunday, November 12, 2023, at 3:00pm, there will be a VERY informal (wear your most comfortable clothing, at Suzanne's request) gathering of friends and family in the backyard of her home in Holton, KS, to release the ashes of her beloved predeceased pets, as well as scatter her ashes among them. She loved her home and her yard, and it is a most fitting resting place for them all.

In addition, on Thursday, November 16, 2023, at 3:00pm, there will be another INFORMAL quiet gathering of family and friends at the Maynard Cemetery in Maynard, Iowa, to scatter her ashes around her Dad's grave, and for moments of remembrance.

Memorials may be given to Heart of Jackson Humane Society, c/o Mercer Funeral Home, P.O. Box 270, Holton, KS 66436.
