Holton- Susie Evelyn Bailey, 102, of Onaga, formerly of Holton passed away Monday June 7, 2010 at Golden Acres in Onaga. She was born on April 8, 1908 in Centralia, Kansas, the daughter of William and Nellie Mae (Atkins) Chance. She attended schools in America City and later Havensville High School graduating in 1927.
She worked for the Holton Hospital as a nurse's aide for 16 years from 1957 - 1973.
Susie was a member of the Havensville Christian Church, a helper for Sunday school for many years, secretary of the Christian Women's Fellowship and served as chairperson of their Martha Groups. She later joined First Christian Church in Holton and was a member of the Orchard Grove Club and helped quilt several quilts for the First Christian Church. She also held many officer positions while she was living at Cypress Glenn Apartments in Holton.
On June 26, 1929, she married James E. Bailey in Soldier. He preceded her in death on November 23, 1978. She was also preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers.
She is survived by her son, Ray M. Bailey of Denver, CO and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday, June 10, 2010 at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Interment will be in Holton Cemetery. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service.
