Steve Pence, 65, Valley Falls, passed away December 23, 2017, due to heart complications and lung cancer.
Graveside services for Steven Wesley Pence will be held at the Valley Falls Cemetery on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life will follow at the Kendall State Bank Community Hall, 408 Broadway, Valley Falls, KS. He was born November 5, 1952 in Topeka, KS, the son of Morris and Shirley Arthur Pence. Being raised by his mother and step-father, Harold S. Allen, Steve's early years were spent in Dorena, Oregon. He learned to swim and fish, and played in the mountain streams of the Row River. Attending high school in Corvallis, OR, he was active in track, especially pole vault, earning many awards. He graduated from Valley Falls High School in 1970.
Steve had been a power line construction worker. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union. Suffering a life-altering injury at age 33, he began his bar tending career at the Broadway Tavern, which lasted over ten years. Most recently, he had worked for many years at the Delmonte Pet Food Products in Topeka. He was also a member of the Sons of the American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his father, Morris Pence, his step-father, Harold S. Allen, and his brother, Jim Pence.
Survivors include his mother, Shirley Allen, Topeka, his sister, Linda J. Bain (Steve), Valley Falls, two nieces, Carrie Belveal (James Kennedy), Valley Falls, Katie Fisher (Justin), Silver Lake, and one nephew, Matt Bain (Amanda), Topeka.
Mercer Funeral Home in Valley Falls is in charge of arrangements.
