Sandra "Sandy" Kaye Dougan

Sandra “Sandy” Kaye Dougan (Hendrix), age 73, passed away on August 6, 2026, at Midland Hospice House in Topeka, Kansas, surrounded by her loving family.

Sandy was born on May 24, 1953, in Kansas City, Missouri, the second of six children to Betty Jean Hendrix (1924-2003) and Earl Raymond Hendrix (1923-1986). Her siblings were Sharon (Tommy) Mah, Greg Hendrix, Dennis (Anne) Hendrix, Kim Hendrix, and Gary Hendrix. Her family later moved to Topeka, where Sandy attended schools and graduated from Washburn Rural High School in 1971.

It was in the halls of Washburn Rural where Sandy met the love of her life, Tom Dougan. Their story began when Sandy asked Tom to the Sadie Hawkins dance during their junior year of high school. They were married on September 3, 1971, in Auburn, Kansas, beginning a life together built on friendship, love, laughter, and devotion to one another.

For the next 55 years, Sandy and Tom were best friends, partners and soulmates. They didn’t necessarily share all the same interests, but they always found a way to enjoy them together.

Together they built a family and a home filled with love. They were blessed with three children: Scott, Kelly and Adam. Sandy devoted much of her life to making a loving home not only for her children, but also for the countless friends who came through the door and were welcomed as part of the family. Caring for others wasn’t simply something Sandy did. It was who she was.

After traveling with the military, Sandy and Tom raised their family in Lyndon, Kansas, where she became an active part of the community. She was involved in several organizations, including Jaynes, Community Business Women, and United Methodist Women. She also served for several years on the USD 421 School Board, including serving as School Board President.

Sandy’s gift for caring for people was also evident during her years as a Mary Kay consultant. What began as a business became something much more meaningful. She treasured the positivity, encouragement and sisterhood she found there. Many of the relationships she formed became lifelong friendships.

Sandy had a quiet but strong faith, and it was abundantly felt in all she met. She didn’t need to speak loudly about it. It could be seen in the way she lived, the way she treated others, and the way she cared for those around her. She was involved with Christian Education for children as a Sunday School teacher and helped with Vacation Bible School every summer. Her love of animals was apparent in the numerous dogs raised in the home through the years.

More than anything, Sandy loved her family. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother and mother-in-law, a proud grandmother, a beloved sister and loyal friend. Her greatest legacy can be found in the family she and Tom built together and the many people who were fortunate enough to be loved and cared for by her.

Sandy is survived by her devoted husband, Tom, of the home; son, Scott (Jennifer) Dougan, Prairie Village, Kansas; daughter Kelly (Clint) Meyer, Hiawatha, Kansas; son Adam (Tiffany) Dougan, Topeka, Kansas; grandsons, Larry Dougan, Samuel Dougan, and Jackson Meyer;

Rod Dougan (Houston, Texas), Greg and Shannan Bradley (Sequim, Washington), and all her siblings.

Sandy was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Betty Jean Hendrix; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Lorraine and John Dougan; sister-in-law, Vicky Dougan; brother-in-law, Dr. Tommy Mah; brother-in-law, Bill Bradley; and sister-in-law, Linda Caulfield.
