TOPEKA- Roscoe Russell Fields, 79, of Topeka, KS formerly of Onaga, KS died Thursday, July 12, 2007 at a Topeka hospital. He was born July 22, 1927 in Onaga, the son of Albert P. and Maude Flora Highfel Fields.
Roscoe had lived in the Onaga and Havensville communities until 1970. He had also lived in Warsaw, MO for 7 years and had been in Topeka for the past 5 years. He was a 5th generation house mover, worked in bridge construction and later in security.
He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was a member of the V.F.W. in Scranton. He was also a member of the Baptist Church in Onaga.
He was married to Viola Baker on June 14, 1946 in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include his sons, Steven Fields of Harveyville, KS, Richard Fields and his wife, Deloras of Netawaka, KS, Bob Fields of Osage City, KS and Terry Fields and his wife, Teresa of Topeka, KS; his sister, Darlene Cantrell of Craig, CO; his brothers, Robert Steele and Ronald Steele both of Bullhead City, AZ; 7 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Dean Steele, his grandson, Danny Fields and a great-grandson, Curtis Smith.
Graveside services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 16, 2007 at the Neuchatel Cemetery northwest of Onaga, KS. The family will greet friends from 6 to 7:30 Sunday evening at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Family and friends are invited to meet at the funeral home Monday morning where procession to the cemetery will begin at 9:15 a.m. Memorials may be given to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital c/o Mercer Funeral Home, Box 270, Holton, KS 66436.
