Richard Lee Flanders, 88, of Topeka, KS, passed away Monday, November 21, 2022 at Tanglewood Health and Rehabilitation. He was born July 5, 1934 in Jackson County, KS, the son of Clarence A. and Maye (Scheidegger) Flanders.
Richard attended Holton High School. Richard proudly served in the United States Navy earning his GED and working as a Boiler Operator Helper earning the Rank of BT3. After the Navy, he was a bus driver in Wichita for 4 years and was a carpenter in California for over 20 years. He was a courier for 1 st American Title Company; retiring in 1997.
Richard married Shirley J. Sharrai on November 25, 1953 in Siloam Springs, AR: they celebrated over 64 years of marriage before she passed on August 17, 2018. He was also preceded in death by 4 brothers, John, Raymond, George, and Paul Flanders.
Survivors include his 4 children, Richard D. Flanders (Sun) of Abilene, TX, Terry L. Flanders of Topeka, KS, Cheryl A. Anderson (Michael) of Redding, CA and Mark D. Flanders (Sheila) of Texas City, TX; a brother Kenneth Flanders (Virginia) of Haysville, KS; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 29, 2022 at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial will follow at the Olive Hill Cemetery. Family will greet friends one hour prior to service time. Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer's Association c/o Mercer Funeral Home, P.O. Box 270, Holton, KS 66436.
