Richard Boyd Chapman, 99 years of age, resident of The Forum at Overland Park, passed away on February 10, 2012. He was born November 9, 1912 the son of Richard Augustus Chapman and Mary Boyd Chapman of St. Louis, MO. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Carol Harszy Chapman of the home and three sons: John and wife Sherri, Arlington, VA; Steven and wife Janice, Olathe, KS; and David, Kansas City, MO. Also two grandchildren: Lisa and husband Scott Smith, Lenexa, KS; Andy Chapman and wife Lissi, Chicago, IL. There are five great grandchildren: Wesley, Ty, Brooke and Lauren Smith; and Anna Chapman.
Richard grew up in St. Louis and attended Cupples Elementary School; Beaumont High School; Monmouth College, Monmouth, IL; and Washington University School of Engineering, St. Louis.
He was employed by Revere Copper & Brass for 41 years. In 1956, he was transferred from St. Louis to Kansas City as District Manager of the sales office here. After retiring, he spent ten years selling GE mobile telephones for Two-Way Communications Co. of Kansas City.
He was a member of Country Club Christian Church and a Life Deacon there. He also developed the Radio Broadcast program of the church. His hobbies included sailing at the Lake of the Ozarks for 23 years. He was a licensed ham radio operator. He loved to travel and play bridge with his friends.
With his sons, he was active in the YMCA's Indian Guides, Scouting, Little League baseball and music. He was also a sponsor of the Christian Youth Fellowship at his church when his sons were active there. Richard was a devoted family man and loved spending time with his grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 9, 2012 at the Country Club Christian Church, 6101 Ward Parkway, Kansas City, MO. Memorial contributions may be made to the Country Club Christian Church Radio Broadcast program C/O Mercer Funeral Home, Box 270, Holton, KS 66436.
