SIMON
NETAWAKA- Ralph E. Simon, Sr. (Ah yatch che sott), 80, died Monday, August 21, 2006 at the Horton Hospital. He was born March 28, 1926 on the Kickapoo Reservation near Horton, KS, the son of Richard and Maude Rhodd Simon, Sr.
Ralph attended the Chilocco Indian School in Oklahoma and also the Horton High School. He was a lifelong resident of Netawaka. He owned and operated Simon Roofing and also farmed for several years.
He was a member of the Kickapoo Drum Religion, a member of the Kickapoo Tribe of Kansas, he served on the Tribal Council spanning 3 decades. He served in the U.S. Air Force during WWII; he was a member of the American Legion in Wetmore and the American Legion KII-KAA-POA-WA-TA-THE-A Post #415 in Horton.
He married Dorothy Pappan on October 17, 1948 in Hiawatha, KS. She survives. Other survivors include 2 sons Ralph E. Simon, Jr. of Sacramento, CA, Daniel Simon of Horton; 2 daughters Jean Simon and June Simon both of Netawaka; 18 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, David Simon in 1970.
Drum Service will be Friday morning beginning at 9:00 a.m. at the MEKOSKAATIKANI Kickapoo Community Building with burial to follow at the Kennekuk Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. A wake will be held Thursday evening beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the community building.
