Philip Keith Overson, 56, Lawrence, died Thursday, March 5, 2015, near Desoto.
He was born Dec. 27, 1958, at Mesa, AZ, the son of Philip Neil and Carole John Overson. Keith graduated National Honor Society from Marcos de Niza High School in Tempe, AZ, where he participated in football, baseball and cross country. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and earned four palms. Keith served a full-time, two year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Chicago area.
He joined the US Navy and served aboard the USS Ticonderoga CG-47, a guided missile cruiser and lead ship in her class. During his time in the Navy, he received an Associates Degree in Electronics.
Keith had worked for General Dynamics Orbital Sciences where he was on teams that built ten satellites. He was currently working for Honeywell Aerospace, Olathe, KS, in their Research and Development Department, working on airplane radio technology. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints at Lawrence where he served as a Ward Missionary.
He was an avid hiker. In Arizona, he especially enjoyed Humphries Peak, Havasupal Canyon, Weaver's Needle, with his crowning hiking achievement being a "Rim to Rim to Rim" hike of the Grand Canyon.
He married Melissa Wissell, Sept. 28, 2005, at Mesa, AZ. He was preceded in death by a brother, Gary Overson, and a son, Israel Allyn Overson, who died on July 31, 1985.
Survivors include his wife, Melissa, of the home; his children, Rick Overson, San Francisco, CA, Alex (Stephonie) Andrews, Topeka, Stacie Overson, Marysville, WA, Elizabeth (Andy) Miller, Valley Falls, Jessica Overson (world adventurer), Kelly Andrews, Topeka, Jeremiah Overson, Rexburg, ID, Alyssa (JP) Houed, Shelton, WA, Lydia (Cody) Stansbury, Topeka, and Lacey Overson, Marysville, WA; his father, Philip Overson, Glendale, AZ; his mother, Carole Overson, Fall City, WA; his sister, Suzanne Bateman, Fall City, WA; and six grandchildren, Natalie, Mason, Hannah, Matilda, David, and Claire.
A graveside service will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 12, 2015, at the Valley Falls Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by Grahem-Herbers Post 3084, Veterans of Foreign Wars. Arrangements are with Mercer Funeral Home in Valley Falls.
