Nellie Marie Freed, 85, of Holton, formerly of Mayetta, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 08, 2006 at Midland Hospice House in Topeka. She was born July 27, 1920 in Arrington, KS, the oldest child of Jacob Richard and Helen Marie (Littleton) Eckert.
Nellie graduated from Holton High School in 1937. She had worked for United Telephone Company in Holton and later worked in advertising and classifieds at the Topeka Capital. She married Glenn Edward Freed on June 6, 1946 in Topeka. Together, they owned and operated Mayetta Oil company from 1950 – 1960. Glenn passed away on July 22, 1980.
Nellie lived in Mayetta for over 50 years where she was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. She later attended St. Dominic Catholic Church in Holton. She had served as City Clerk of Mayetta for 28 years and upon her retirement in 1991, the City Hall building was dedicated in her honor. She hosted many Christmas Day lunch parties that are remembered fondly by her family. Nellie was a generous, loving, and thoughtful woman whose sweet smile will be missed by many.
Nellie was never blessed with any children, but she was blessed with a large extended family that loved her; her brother, Richard E. Eckert of Wetmore, KS; her three sisters, Helen Marceline Marinich of Canton, IL, Mary Erma Doyle of Holton, KS and Marjorie Ann Sage of Olympia, WA. She is also survived by five nieces, seven nephews, fifteen grandnieces, fourteen grandnephews, eleven great-grandnieces and thirteen great-grandnephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two nieces and a nephew.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 11, 2006 at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Holton. A Rosary will be at 7:00 p.m. Monday evening followed by visitation at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. She will be buried next to her husband and parents at St. Joseph Cemetery in Hoyt, KS.
