CIRCLEVILLE-Dr. Michael Harris Roller was born on April 20, 1922 in Soldier, Kansas the son of James & Elizabeth (Bess) Nicholas Roller. He died on August 17th, 2011 at Stormont-Vail Health Center in Topeka, KS at the age of 89.
In 1931 the Roller family moved from Soldier to the new farmstead they built in Circleville, Kansas. Mike and his sister Virginia attended grade school in Circleville. He graduated from Circleville High School in 1940. Mike became a lieutenant in the US Army Air Corps and served as a pilot for the 66th Troop Carrier Squadron from 1942-45. He was united in marriage to Opal (Pat) Pickerign of Eau Galle, WI on April 18, 1944 in Manhattan, KS, and they raised three children.
Mike earned his BS and DVM (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine) from Kansas State University in 1950 and ran a private veterinary practice in Highland, KS from 1950 to 1961. He taught Surgery & Medicine in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University in 1964 and Physiology from 1965-66. After earning his PHD from Kansas State University in 1966, he moved his family to Brookings, SD, where he became a Professor for South Dakota State University in the Entomology/Zoology department until his retirement in 1986.He was a member of the Circleville United Methodist Church, a Mason for over 60 years, Gamma Sigma Delta, Sigma Xi, KVMA, and AVMA. His hobbies included photography, gardening and woodworking.
He returned to Circleville because family ties run deep, his grandfather was the first mayor and Mike was the Grand Marshal of the 2008 Circleville "Circlefest" Parade for the 150th celebration.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents James and Elizabeth, his wife Pat in 1999 after 55 years of marriage and daughter Claudia Roller in 2007. Survivors include his son David M. Roller (Circleville, KS), daughter Cindy J. Roller (Sioux Falls, SD), sister Virginia Windels (Brookfield, MO), and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial service will be 1:30 p.m. Friday, August 19, 2011 at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Interment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the Michael Roller Memorial Fund, to be designated later, and may be left in c/o Mercer Funeral Home P.O. Box 270, Holton, KS 66436.
