Mary L. McGrath
Denison- Mary Linda McGrath, 67, of Denison, KS passed away April 14, 2010 at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka. She was born March 28, 1943 in Washington D.C. the daughter of Elwood Franklin and Bertha French Lonas Mathieson.
She graduated in 1961 from Anacostia High School in Washington D.C. She had lived in the Denison/Holton community since 1989 and in Topeka from 1979 to 1989. Due to Multiple Sclerosis, Mary had many physical challenges; this allowed her to be a full time matriarch of a loving family. She enjoyed volunteering at the St. Francis Hospital rehab floor.
She married James R. McGrath on May 24, 1961 in Washington D.C., they later divorced.
Survivors include four daughters, Margaret E. "Peggy" McGrath of DeSoto, KS, Judith L. "Judy" May and her husband Roger of Holton, KS, Patricia E. "Patty" Durkin and her husband Raymond "Spike" of DeSoto, KS, Evelyn K. Gorden of Holton, KS; two brothers, Dr. Robert D. Mathieson and his wife Diane of Baltimore, MD, James D. Mathieson and his wife Sandy of Waldorf, MD; nine grandchildren, Megan, Sean and Ryan Thomas, Katy, Ashley and Trey Durkin, Daniel, Ellen and Maryanne Gorden; two step-grandchildren, Gabriel and Delena May; two great grandchildren, Kaelyn and Edith Delaney; a sister-in-law, Linda Mathieson of Lanham, MD; a brother-in-law who was a big part of her life, William P. Miskell and his wife Carol "Sue" of Topeka, KS; a grand-dog, Jack; her cats, Sweetie, One-Eye, Striped Kitty, Kiki Marie; a dog, Noel and lots of obese squirrels and singing birds.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Catherine J. Mathieson; a brother, Elwood F. Mathieson, Jr. and a great granddaughter, Emma French Delaney.
Mary was cremated; a Celebration of Life will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 17, 2010 at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Family will greet friends from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. Saturday. Memorials may be given to the St. Francis Hospital 4th Floor Rehab Unit c/o Mercer Funeral Home, P.O. Box 270, Holton, KS 66436. A private family inurnment will be at a later date.
