Obituary

Mary L. Maxfield, 72, Valley Falls, died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012, at her home.

She was born on June 18, 1939, at Grantville, the daughter of Robert Z. and Myrtle E. Jones Cox. She graduated from Oskaloosa High School.

Mary was a homemaker and a regular volunteer for many organizations. She was a member of the Coal Creek United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for 30 years. She was past- president of the Ladies Auxiliary of Grahem-Herbers Post 3084, Veterans of Foreign Wars and served as a District officer for the VFW Auxiliary. She was a past president of the PTA at ACCHS. at Effingham, a member of both the Valley Falls Historical Society and the Jefferson County Genealogical Society and a volunteer at God's Storehouse at Meriden.

She married Roy Jay Maxfield on Aug. 17, 1957, at Oskaloosa. He died on Sept. 18, 2005. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Carl Cox.

Survivors include her son, Charles Wesley (Becky) Maxfield, Butler, MO; her daughter, Nedra Jane (Frank) Boyce, Valley Falls; two brothers, Leroy Cox, Ft. Scott, and Leslie Cox, Topeka; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, Feb. 24, 2012, at the Coal Creek United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at the Coal Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday, at Mercer Funeral Home in Valley Falls.
