Mary A. Kaul, 94, of Wetmore, KS died January 5, 2012 at the Pines in Holton.
She was born December 6, 1917 in Circleville, Kansas the daughter of George and Charlotte Mae (Bunker) Deck. She graduated from Holton High School in 1936 and attended business school in Topeka.
Mary married Harold "Shorty" Kaul June 4, 1937 in Holton. During WWII, Mary made multiple trips to the west coast to be with Shorty while he served in the Navy. She and Shorty owned and operated The Hamburger Inn (The Dump) in Holton for nine years. In 1958, Shorty became manager of the First National Bank of Wetmore where Mary was also employed for many years.
Mary was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Wetmore where she served as treasurer for many years. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women, the All Star Club of Holton and the Modern Study Club of Wetmore. She enjoyed playing pinochle and belonged to bridge clubs in both Holton and Wetmore.
Mary is survived by her daughters, Judith Ann Bontrager (Harold) of Sedona, AZ and Susan Jane Alley of Topeka, KS; her son, John Deck Kaul (Joyce) of Clay Center, KS; her eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild and several nieces and nephews. Harold preceded her in death on September 14, 1992. Mary was also preceded in death by her brothers, Karl, John, Paul and Phillip Deck and her great-grandson, Cale Alley.
Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday January 9th, 2012 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton with burial following at the Holton Cemetery. The family will greet friends Sunday from 1-3:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
