MARGARET "MARGE" L. SCHOONOVER
Margaret "Marge" L. Schoonover, 88, Valley Falls, died Friday, June 27, 2008, at a Topeka hospital.
She was born June 30, 1919, at Haxtun, CO, the daughter of Schulyer and Adelaide McClurg Spurlock. She graduated from Valley Falls High School in 1937, attended the University of Kansas for one year and later received her B.S. and M.A. degrees from Washburn University.
She was an elementary teacher for 47 years. retiring from the Valley Falls School District in 1984. Prior to that she had taught at Fairview, New Century, Bolton, No. Nine, Blue Mound and Rock Creek rural schools. She was a member of the First Christian Church where she had served as a Deaconess and Sunday School Teacher. She was a member of the Bloomfield Club, Blue Mound Club, Delaware Quilters and the Jefferson County Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority. Marge was honored as Grand Marshal of the 2004 Jefferson County Parade.
She married Gifford O'Neil "Neil" Schoonover at Valley Falls. He died on May 8, 1956. She was also preceded in death by a bother, Mack Bellamy and five sisters, Mary Clements, Charlene Fox, Alice Montieth, Lois Howard and Jean Marsden.
Survivors include a son, William "Bill" L. Schoonover, and a daughter, Sarah Jane Hollis, both of Valley Falls; three grandchildren, Matthew Hollis, Ashley Brooke Schoonover and Allen Seth Schoonover; a great-grandson, Brodie Lane Hollis, and many nephews and nieces.
A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 1, 2008, at the First Christian Church in Valley Falls. Burial will be at the Valley Falls Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:30-8:30 p.m., Monday, at Mercer Funeral Home in Valley Falls. Memorial contributions may be made to Jefferson County District 11 EMS or to Jefferson County 4-H Foundation and sent in care of Mercer Funeral Home, 810 Broadway, Valley Falls, KS 66088.
