Obituary

Marion Ann Jensen King was born on October 28, 1920, to Hans and Myrtle (Hubbell) Jensen.  Marion grew up on a farm 7 miles north of Hays, Kansas in Ellis County.  Marion was the middle child, having a brother Arthur, one year older, and a brother George, one year younger.  Her grade school years were in a one-room school 2 miles from her home.  She recalls they never had snow days.  If the roads were drifted, they would get to school in a horse-drawn wagon across the fields.  She graduated from Hays High School in 1938, attended Fort Hays State for 2 years, and then graduated from Kansas State University in 1943 with a degree in Home Economics (Dietetics).  After completing her Dietetic Internship at Edward J. Meyer Memorial Hospital in Buffalo New York, she enlisted in the Army as a Hospital Dietitian.   She was attached to the 176th Field Hospital on Saipan and the 204th General Hospital on Guam.  She was discharged in 1946 as a 1st Lieutenant.  She was awarded the A P Campaign Medal with 1 Bronze Star (having served in a combat zone), WWII Victory Medal, and 2 Overseas Bars (indicating 1 year of overseas deployment). After discharge from military service, she worked as a Therapeutic Dietitian at Swedish Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota and Methodist Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska.

After World War II, she took advantage of the GI Bill and obtained her pilot license by training in a single-engine Piper Cub.

In 1953 she married Calvin King (later divorced).  They had one daughter, Ann (Phil) Wassenberg.

Throughout the years she enjoyed participating in Elder Hostels, taking classes at Washburn University, and traveling with various tour groups.

Marion was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, one great-granddaughter and ex-husband.  Survivors include her daughter Ann (Phil) Wassenberg, granddaughter Charis (Clifton) Barth, 4 great-grandchildren (Corban, Miriam, Verity, Honora), and nieces and nephews.

Marion died on September 18, 2023 at the age of 102 in Holton, Kansas, missing her 103rd birthday by 1 month and 10 days.    Marion wanted her body donated to KU Medical Center for research and teaching and requested no funeral.  Mercer Funeral Home is in charge of her arrangements.
