Mabel "Grace" Johnson, 93, of Overland Park, KS passed away October 19, 2012 at Comfort Care Homes of Kansas City. She was born June 29, 1919 in Soldier, KS the daughter of George Milton and Nellie Ann (Needham) Hamilton.
Grace graduated from Soldier High School in 1937 and from St. Francis School of Nursing in 1941 as a registered nurse. She worked for Dr. W.W. Reed (EENT) in Topeka. She joined the United States Army during WWII and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan serving as a nurse for the 88th Field Unit. From 1958 to 1981, Grace was a school nurse for Oak Grove Elementary School as well as a part time RN for Providence Hospital, both in Kansas City, KS.
She was a member of the Merriam Christian Church in Merriam, KS, a member of O.E.S. in Soldier, KS and a member of True Kindred in Shawnee, KS.
Grace married Robert E. Johnson, Sr. on January 24, 1945 in Topeka, KS. He passed away on August 4, 2009. She was also preceded in death by a son, Robert E. Johnson, Jr. in 2003; a grandson, Benjamin Robert Morris in 1998; a sister, Georgia McBroom and 2 brothers, Herman Paul "Hesser" Hamilton and Merlin J. "Pete" Hamilton.
Survivors include 2 daughters, Nancy Morris (Benjamin) of Tampa, FL and Gloria Walker of Overland Park, KS; 4 grandchildren, Aaron F. Morris (Jennifer), of Lacey, WA, Lily and Chase Johnson both of Camarillo, CA and Ryan Huang of Overland Park, KS.
Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday, October 25, 2012 at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial with military honors will be in the Holton Cemetery. Grace will lie in state through service time Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer's Assoc. or Holton VFW Post #1367 c/o Mercer Funeral Home, Box 270, Holton, KS 66436.
