LOLA MAE SMITH
Valley Falls -Lola Mae Smith, 82, Topeka, formerly of Valley Falls, died Friday, March 16, 2007, at St. Francis Medical Center in Topeka.
She was born Sept. 18, 1924, north of Valley Falls at Half Mound, the daughter of Carl Gustave and Sylvia Sarah Magdalena Engler Leutert, She graduated from Valley Falls High School in 1942. She moved to Topeka and most recently was a resident at Atria Hearthstone East.
Lola was a clerk for the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad in Topeka from 1943 until she retired in 1987.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, the Kanza Study Club, several bridge clubs and Chapter DK PEO Sisterhood, all in Valley Falls. She was also a member of the Santa Fe Prime Timers.
She married James Truitt Smith in 1946 at Topeka. They were divorced. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Jay Miles, on Feb. 22, 2006. Survivors include a son, Truitt Smith, and his wife Jenny, Houston, TX; a daughter, Sara Miles, and her husband, Ron, Topeka; five grandchildren, Stuart Miles, Amanda Smith, Suzanne Smith, Melynda Smith and Jenna Smith and a daughter-in-law, Jeanette Smith.
A Memorial Graveside Service will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, March 19, 2007, at the Valley Falls Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., Sunday, at Mercer Funeral Home in Valley Falls.
