MARTINEZ

TOPEKA-Logie R. Martinez, 86, of Topeka, passed away Monday, August 4, 2008 at Plaza West Regional Health Center in Topeka, KS. He was born March 11, 1922 in Topeka, the son of Manuel and Jovita Ruiz Martinez.
He graduated from Capitol Catholic High School in Topeka. He served in the United States Army during World War II serving in the Pacific Theatre. He was a boilermaker for Sante Fe for many years. He was a member of American Legion Capitol Post #1 in Topeka, a pianist for Los Noctures Orchestra in the 1930's, he played with BJ Forgy Band, a volunteer for LULAC, a member of New Beginnings Choir of Topeka, a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe and was a pianist for the church.
Mr. Martinez married Zelda I. Mitchell on February 8, 1948 in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Laura Thackery and Sheila Fitzgerald both of Topeka; a son, Manuel Martinez of Topeka; a sister, Henrietta Flowers of Topeka; 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Ralph "Sonny" Martinez on April 10, 2008; three sisters, Mabel Perez, Vera Guiterrez and Tillie Gonzalez and three brothers, Pedro, Anthony and Joe Martinez.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday, August 7, 2008 at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Topeka. Prayer Vigil will be at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at the church followed by Scripture Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in the Shipshee Cemetery in Mayetta.
