Leonard Nissen, 84, of Wetmore passed away at Stormont-Vail Hospital Saturday, October 12th, 2013.
He was born September 10, 1929 in Wetmore the son of Fritz and Lillian (Moore) Nissen. He attended Social Hill Grade School #72 and graduated from Wetmore High School in 1947. Leonard had worked at Independent Communications and retired in 1990. He also worked at Nemaha County Rural Water District #4 and was a founding board member and key part in forming the district. He later became manager and retired in 2012. Leonard served on the Wetmore Township Board for many years. He was a member of Wetmore Lions Club, Levick-Barrett American Legion Post 282 and Wetmore United Methodist Church. He enlisted with the United States Air Force and proudly served his country from 1951-1955. On February 10, 1950, he married Mary Ann Schlodder in Wetmore. She survives of the home. Other survivors include: his daughters, Evette Nissen (Richard Howard) of Columbia, MO, Cindy Grollmes (Mark) of Circleville, KS and Tammy Pfrang (Keith) of Fort Worth, TX; his grandchildren, Matt Grollmes, Doug Grollmes, Sam Pfrang and Olivia Pfrang; his step-grandchildren, Michael Howard and James Pfrang and his 3 step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Carl and Raymond Nissen.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 16th, 2013 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial with military honors will be in Wetmore Cemetery. The family will greet friends Tuesday evening from 6-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to American Legion Post 282 and may be sent in care of Mercer Funeral Home, P.O.
