Rev. John H. Tweed, 90, of Winchester, KS, passed away Monday, May 25, 2020 at his home with family by his side. He was born Dec. 28, 1929, at Beaver Falls, PA, the son of Dr. James Boyd and Elizabeth Dodds Tweed. He graduated from Beaver Falls High School in 1947, Geneva College in 1951, and the Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary, Pittsburgh, PA, in 1954.
Rev. Tweed was ordained to the Gospel Ministry of the Reformed Presbyterian Church of North America, July 8, 1954. He served pastorates at Youngstown, OH, Fresno, CA, Kansas City, MO, Shawnee, KS, Pittsburgh, PA, and at two churches in Beaver Falls, first at Geneva RPC, and later at First Beaver Falls RPC.
He retired to Winchester in 1996. He then continued to serve 18 years as an interim pastor at 16 different congregations in the U.S. and internationally in Japan and Ireland. Rev. Tweed was a member of many boards and committees of the denomination. He had served as a Trustee and a member of the Board of Corporators for Geneva College, as a Trustee for the Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary, and on the board of the Reformed Presbyterian Home in Pittsburgh. In 2015 he was honored by the seminary for a lifetime of service to the denomination.
John served for many years as a Chaplain for Jefferson County Hospice. He also preached as he had opportunity at area northeast Kansas RPC congregations. He was a member of the Winchester RPC.
Rev. Tweed married Alta Marie Blackwood, August 5, 1954, at Beaver Falls. She was his faithful supporter in every aspect of his ministry.
Survivors include his wife, Alta, of the home at Winchester, KS; two sons, Stuart (Laura) Tweed, Springfield, VA, and Alan (Lisa) Tweed, Madison, CT; and three daughters, Carol (Bill) Boyle, Shawnee, KS, Cynthia (Jay) O'Neill, Winchester, KS, and Alison (Chad) Agnew, Darlington, PA; 15 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Nathan O'Neill and an infant grandson; a brother, Dr. Robert Tweed; and a sister, Alison Blair.
Rev. Tweed was a beloved pastor and mentor to countless people across the denomination and in the communities where he lived. He faithfully preached from the scriptures the full gospel message of his Savior. He was known for his regular phone calls to express his encouragement and prayer support to friends and family.
There will be a private family graveside service at the Winchester Reformed Presbyterian Cemetery. A Memorial Service will be held at the Winchester Reformed Presbyterian Church at a later date.
