John Nicholas Stein, 82, Valley Falls, died Wednesday, March 16, 2011, at Hickory Pointe Care Center in Oskaloosa.
He was born on Jan. 27, 1929, at Valley Falls, the son of William B. & Anna Kelly Stein. He graduated from Valley Falls High School in 1947. He was in the US Army and served in Korea during that war.
John was a carpenter and a business agent for Carpenters Local 1445 in Topeka. He was past Commander of Grahem-Herbers Post 3084 Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a member of St. Marys Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, Council 6671, all in Valley Falls.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, Bill Stein, Joe Stein, Jack Stein, Jim Stein and Tony Stein, and two sisters, Mary Robben and Betty Reece.
Survivors include a brother, Frank Stein, Zephyr Cove, NV; four sisters, Doris Akers, Osawatomie, Rita Stein and Joan Stein, both of San Francisco, CA and Judy Reichart, Social Circle, GA, and many nephews and nieces.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Valley Falls. Burial will follow at the church cemetery with military honors conducted by Grahem-Herbers Post 3084 V.F.W. A Rosary followed by a visitation will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, at Mercer Funeral Home in Valley Falls.
