After 45 years of uncertainty and a sense of loss, John Cecil Eagle (Dabonit) has finally been identified and returned to his family from near, Denver, Colorado. He is a member of the Sac & Fox Tribe of Mississippi in Iowa. John was born to Frank Eagle and Blanche O’Bennick on May 4, 1936 in Tama, Iowa. John passed away on April 15, 1982, near, Denver, Colorado. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters, Virginia Youngbear of Iowa, Arlene Rascon of Oklahoma and Christine Eagle of Mayetta, Kansas; a daughter Rose Craft; 4 sons, Glen Stacey Eagle, Ron Eagle, Darrel Eagle, and Wayne Eagle; 2 grandsons, Jason Craft and Jeremy Eagle. John is survived by his spouse Belle May Wabenum Eagle of Topeka, Kansas; 3 daughters, Joy Bricker (Byron), Janelle Humphrey and Cheryl Munday (Joe) all of Topeka, Kansas; and a son John Eagle Jr. of Topeka, Kansas.
The family is grateful to the Arapaho County Colorado Sheriffs Office, the Arapaho County Colorado Coroner’s Office, Colorado Bureau Investigation and MMIR Task Force for the diligent work, thereby enabling his name to be returned to him and to provide closure for his family. John’s family will have a private inurnment where he will be laid to rest in the O’Bennick Family Cemetery on the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation Reservation, east of Delia, Kansas.
