Obituary

Jewell A. Hinkle, 84, of Wetmore, KS passed away Friday, May 21, 2010 at the Hiawatha Community Hospital. He was born June 7, 1925 in Powhattan, KS, the son of George Blaine and Della Faye Newlin Hinkle.
Jewell graduated from Fairview High School in 1943. He served in the Army during World War II. He worked for Beech Aircraft in Wichita and Lueck Grain in Netawaka. Jewell had lived in Wetmore since 1957 and worked for Goodyear for 23 years, retiring in 1980. He was a member of Wetmore United Methodist Church, a 55 year member of Mayetta Masonic Lodge #393 A.F.&A.M., a life member of Wetmore American Legion Post #282, a life member of V.F.W. Post #1367 in Holton and he belonged to the United Steel Workers Local #307.
Jewell married Phyllis Jean Spiker on June 7, 1948 at Wetmore United Methodist Church Parsonage. She survives. He is survived by his daughters, Connie Jones (Don) of Topeka, KS and Cathy Latham (John) of Wetmore, KS; his brothers, Merrill Hinkle of Mayetta, KS and Edward Hinkle of Wetmore, KS; his sister, Laura Autry of Topeka, KS; grandchildren, David Jones, Doug Jones (Rachel), Jeff Jones (Marie), Jennifer Strathman (Robert) and Chris Latham (Bre) and 8 great-grandchildren. Jewell was preceded in death by his daughter, Edith Ann Hinkle; his son, Steven Allen Hinkle; and 2 granddaughters, Julie Ann Jones and Lisa Nicole Latham.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 25, 2010 at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Interment will be in Wetmore Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials to American Lung Assoc. or Jackson Heights Honor Flight c/o Mercer Funeral Home, Box 270, Holton, KS 66436.
