Obituary

James Alexander Ferguson, 97, Valley Falls, died Saturday, September 4, 2010, at Deer Park North Senior Group Home at Meriden.
James Alexander Ferguson, the oldest son of James Henderson and Anna Mary (Senn) Ferguson was born July 30, 1913, on their farm southwest of Toronto, KS. In 1919 the family moved to a farm near Toronto so Alex could attend the Toronto Public Schools. Alex graduated from Toronto High School in 1932. Following graduation he was employed on a farm near Chicago until he joined the U.S. Navy in 1942. Alex served on various Naval bases in U.S. and the Pacific until 1946 .
After his discharge from the service, he moved to Valley Falls, KS, where he joined his uncle and aunt, Earl and Lida Ferguson, in their farming and ranching operations.
Following the deaths of Earl and Lida in the 1960's, Alex became the fourth generation owner of Longview Farm, the Ferguson family farm since 1858. In 2000, Alex sold the family farm and moved to the LinnWood Assisted Living Home in Valley Falls.
Alex faithfully attended the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Valley Falls, served as a board member of the Jefferson County Memorial Hospital, and was a member of the Valley Falls Historical Society. Alex was proud of his Scottish heritage and spent many hours researching the Ferguson and Henderson clans. For many years he enjoyed the Scottish Games and the gathering of the clans in Tulsa, OK.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Carroll Ferguson, and a sister, Elizabeth Ferguson.
Survivors include three brothers, Alfred G. Ferguson, Toronto, KS.; Paul M. Ferguson of Tulsa, OK.; and Gilbert A. Ferguson of Fredonia, KS; one niece, one nephew, and a cousin, Gladys Wunder, Valley Falls.
The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at the Valley Falls Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church on Thursday from 1:00 p.m., until service time.
