Irma M. Steinmetz, 87, Overland Park, formerly of Valley Falls, KS, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012, at Sweet Life at Brookdale Place.
She was born on April 17, 1925, at Valley Falls, the daughter of Peter A. and Anna J. Sisk Stein. She graduated from Valley Falls High School.
She married Virgil M. Steinmetz on February 12, 1945, at Midland, TX Army Air Corps Chapel. To this union was born their son, Fred Steinmetz in Oct. 1946.
After Virgil completed military duty in 1945, they moved back to their home town of Valley Falls. Virgil and Irma soon began their own business as service station owners, retiring in 1992. Both enjoyed their time in the community with many personal friends and business associates. Virgil and Irma moved to the Kansas City area in 2008 to be closer to their immediate family.
Irma was a member of St. Mary's Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Valley Falls and the Altar Society of the church. She was also a Den Mother for Cub Scout Troop #84; served on the Valley Falls City Council; was a member of the Women of the Moose, Chapter #1091 in Topeka; and a member of the Tuesday Afternoon Bridge Club, Valley Falls.
Virgil died on May 5, 2009. Irma was also preceded in death by five brothers, Virgil, Edwin, Clayton, Eugene and Donald Stein, and two sisters, Elizabeth Candreia and Patricia Ferrell.
Survivors include her son, Fred Steinmetz, and his wife, Diane, Overland Park; two grandchildren, Ryan Steinmetz and Stacey Armenta, and her husband, Stephen; two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Daniel Armenta, and a sister, Viola Howard, Lawrence. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, at St. Mary's Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Valley Falls. Burial will follow at the Valley Falls Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church at 9:30 a.m. with a Rosary prayed at 10:00 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Topeka Rescue Mission and sent in care of Mercer Funeral Home, PO Box 6, Valley Falls, KS 66088.
