MAYETTA- Herbert "James" Harjo, 75, of Mayetta, KS passed away Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at his home on the Prairie Band Potawatomi Reservation. He was born July 23, 1942 in Hanna, OK the son of Charley and Mary (Foster) Harjo.
James was a roofer and self employed contractor who worked for various construction companies. His construction career took him all over the United States. He was a member of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation and Muscogee Creek Ceremonial.
James married Velma Wahwasuck on September 10, 2001 in Reno, NV. She survives of the home. Other survivors include 4 sons, Victor Harjo of Tecumseh, OK, Danny Harjo of Tulsa, OK Herbert James Harjo, Jr. of Tulsa, OK, and Kevin Harjo of Morris, OK; 2 sisters, Geraldine Dunn of Okmulgee, OK and Mary Wood of Shawnee, OK; and many grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Retna Harjo and a brother, Phillip Harjo.
Visitation will be from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. Friday, September 22, 2017 at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. A wake will follow at his home in Mayetta. The Family will conduct a sunrise burial in the Wahwasuck Cemetery on the Prairie Band Reservation.
