Henry Lee Shove, 88 of Milford and Orange Connecticut passed away October 16th 2023. Henry was born July 7th 1935. He was the youngest son of Henry Wade and Janie May (Nicholas) Shove. Henry grew up with his three older brothers; Gene, Cecil, and Noel Shove on a family farm in Havensville, Kansas. Henry was the last survivor of his immediate family.
Henry was known as Uncle Hank to the next generation of niece and nephews; Myrene (Shove) Brown of Zionsville, IN, Tim Shove of Boulder, CO, Greg Shove (deceased) and Kent Shove (deceased). Hank has three great-nieces and four great-nephews. In the fourth generation of 5 a recently born great-great niece carries on Hank's middle name; Zinnia Lee Shove of Houston, TX.
Henry attended grade school at English Ridge Country School. There was a short time during Henry's 2nd grade when only Henry and his brother Cecil were students at the school. Upon graduating from Havensville Rural High School Henry attended Kansas State University. He graduated in 1958 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Henry served in the U.S. Army as a mechanical Engineering Assistant SPC 5. Henry worked for the small housework division of General Electric / Black & Decker as a Product Manager, retiring in 1993.
Henry continued his upbeat, organized, enthusiastic approach to life after retiring. He spent time exercising at a local gym, hiking, having meals with friends, and traveling. There was always at least one longer trip each year to somewhere of interest. Henry toured the Galapagos Islands on a small ship with his brother Cecil and Marty, zip-lined in Costa Rica, rode on horseback from camp to camp in the High Sierra Mountains with "gourmet" meals served from a chuckwagon. Henry took so many trips with his traveling-friends that only a few can be mentioned.
Words that describe Henry are generous, minimalistic, fun loving, knowledgeable, spirited, and kind. Henry knew how to enjoy life. He is known for ordering dessert first at a restaurant meal with his great-nephew Barclay. Henry managed to live a high-quality life near the end despite his cancer diagnosis a year and a half ago.
Henry did not leave any guidance as to memorial contributions. He was always generous to those in his presence which included not only family and friends, but wait-staff. I think Henry would appreciate the continuation of kindness and generosity to others from all of us whose lives he touched.
Memorial Service will be 10:45 a.m. Sunday, May 26th, 2024 at Bucks Grove United Methodist Church. Inurnment will follow at the Bucks Grove Cemetery. Following the service there will be a lunch provided by the HRHS Association and the Alumni Association at the HRHS Building "old gym" in Havensville for friends and family to gather.
