Gracie Rose (Combs) Thompson, 93, of Winchester, Kansas (formerly of Valley Falls, KS) passed away on January 22, 2024 at F.W. Huston Senior Living Center.  Grace was born on March 20, 1930 in McFall, Missouri to Arthur Merle and Ethel May Cropper Combs.  She was a 1948 graduate of Valley Falls High School. She was a homemaker and delivered the Topeka Capital-Journal for 25 years until her retirement in 1987.

She married Adlai Alvan Thompson in 1948.  He preceded her in death in March of 1980.  She was also preceded in death by her daughter Gracie Elaine Thompson and son Steven Wayne Thompson and siblings Anna Lee Gragg, Velma Shaffer, and Earl Combs. Grace is lovingly survived by her daughter, Debbie Gerstner of Valley Falls and son Tom Thompson of Reston, Virginia; 4 grandchildren, Willie (Betsy) Schmelzle and Randy (Brandy) Schmelzle, Benjamin Thompson, and Amanda Cordray; and 10 great-grandchildren, Lainey Schmelzle, Sam Schmelzle, Sway Schmelzle, Brooklynn Schmelzle, Tucker Schmelzle, Sawyer Schmelzle, Isabella Thompson, Lillian Darveaux, Mary Madison Cordray, and Elijah Cordray and one sister, Jean Newman of Winchester.

Grace was a member of the First Christian Church in Valley Falls and could often be found at the ballfields watching baseball and softball games.  She was also an avid bird watcher and reader, enjoyed quilting, and loved getting together with her Class of '48 friends.

Services will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 27, 2024 at the Valley Falls Christian Church. Burial will follow at the Valley Falls Cemetery. Grace will lie in state Thursday from 2 - 6 p.m. and on Friday, from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. at the Mercer Funeral Home in Valley Falls, KS.
