Gladys A. Shay, 85, formerly of Kansas City, Kansas, died Friday, July 6, 2007, at her home in Wichita, Kansas. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 10, at Mercer Funeral Home, Holton, Kansas. Burial will be in the Holton Cemetery. Friends may call on the family from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Washburn University General Scholarship Fund. Gladys was born on February 1, 1922, at Whiting, Kansas. She had lived in Wichita, before moving to Kansas City, Kansas, in 1968. She was a graduate of the Christ Hospital School of Nursing in Topeka, Kansas. In Wichita, she was a leader in her children's Boy Scout and Girl Scout organizations. In addition, she was involved as a volunteer in her children's schools. Gladys also worked for many years at the Woodlawn Nursing Center as an R.N. Upon moving to Kansas City, she worked as an R.N. at Kansas City Presbyterian Manor. She was a volunteer for the Shepherd's Center of Kansas City, Kansas, and was active in the local AARP Chapter #1477 holding various leadership positions. She was an avid reader as well as being a generous blood donor for the American Red Cross. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sherman and Mae Shupe of Holton, Kansas; her sister Ivone and her husband Bing Miller of Dallas, Texas; and her husband and childhood sweetheart of 62 years, Jim. She is survived by two sons, Mike Shay and his wife Mary, of Wichita, Kansas; Kevin Shay and his wife Doris, Derby, Kansas; two daughters, Debby, and husband Bob Hull, of Derby, Kansas, and their children, Kathy and Tony; and daughter Dana Shay of Kansas City; sister, Shirley Clowe and her husband Chuck of Topeka.
