Obituary

George Nelson Haas, 82, of Holton passed away Monday, August 15, 2011 at Medicalodge Jackson County in Holton. He was born April 1, 1929 in Holton the son of Homer C. and Edith (Meade) Haas. He graduated from Holton High School in 1948 and was a lifelong member of the Jackson County community.
George worked for the United States Government for 43 years. He had worked at the Supply Depot of Topeka and later in various departments in the VA Hospital, retiring in 1995. George was a member of the Evangel United Methodist Church in Holton, Masonic Lodges in Holton and Netawaka, Scottish Rite of Topeka, Arab Shrine of Topeka, Antique Unit in the Arab Shrine, IOOF Lodge #34 and NARFE.
He married Melba Joyce Ely on June 26, 1950 in Netawaka, KS. She preceded him in death on November 30, 2005. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Haas Rumsey in 2001; 2 sisters, Ida Kondruck and Janice Saltis and a brother Sam Haas.
Survivors include 2 sons, Rick Haas (Luanne) of Holton and Randy Haas (Sandi) of Topeka; a daughter, Lucinda "Cindy" Fox (Don) of Mayetta; 2 sister-in-laws, Estella Pagel of Holton and Maryann Tuck of Chico, CA; 8 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 18, 2011 at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Interment will be in the Holton Cemetery. Family will greet friends from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the Holton Fairgrounds – Heritage Complex c/o Mercer Funeral Home P.O.
