Eugene "Gene" C. Matchie

Eugene Curtis “Gene” “Wab nuk she” Matchie, 56, of Mayetta, KS, passed away Tuesday, February 3, 2026 at Stormont Vail Hospital with family by his side. He was born September 19, 1969 in Holton, KS, the son of Roland Joseph and Janis Marie (Pahmahmie) Matchie.

Gene attended Holton High School. He earned his GED and attended a vocational school in Topeka. He was a diesel and heavy equipment mechanic, working for the Prairie Band Potawatomi Tribe for Road and Bridge and also Transportation as a mechanic. He had also worked for Lovvorn Brothers in Holton and was a slot tech at Prairie Band Casino.

He was a believer in Jesus Christ and of no particular denomination. Gene was a member of Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation.

Gene married Theresa Marie Zacharias on May 23, 1992 in Platte Co., MO. They celebrated over 34 years of marriage.

Survivors include his wife, Theresa of the home; his parents, Roland and Janis Matchie of Holton, KS; 3 children, Amanda McFarland (Philip) of Topeka, KS, Rebecca Fitzpatrick (Wesley) of Mayetta, KS and Michael Matchie (Haley Vaughn) of Tonganoxie, KS; 2 sisters, Jolene Matchie and Lydia Matchie both of Holton, KS; brother, Joseph Matchie of Holton, KS and 8 grandchildren, Curtis, Krissi, Autumn, Skyler, Lexus, Sophia, Austin and Kaelyn.

Memorial Service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 10, 2026 at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton with burial to follow at Thunder Eagle Cemetery. Family will greet friends Monday evening from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
