Elva Louise Ferrell née Koons, a devoted mother, grandmother, church lady, and friend, passed away peacefully on the afternoon of December 27, 2024. She was 98.
Elva was born on the family farm in Valley Falls, Kansas, on November 6, 1926. She was the seventh of eight children born to George and Mary Koons. Elva graduated from Valley Falls High School in 1944 and worked as one of the town's switchboard operators. In 1946, she met Vernon Ferrell at a town hall dance. They married in June 1947. Together, they embarked on a life that took them across the country, and was always filled with love, family, good humor, and home cooking.
Over the next two decades, Elva would call many places home: Kansas, Nebraska, New York, California, and Oklahoma. While Oklahoma became her favorite of all of them, the sunflower remained her favorite flower, a nod to her Kansas roots. She settled in Midwest City in 1964 and would live there the rest of her life. Along the way, Elva and Vernon welcomed four children —Dennis, Joan, Susan, and Gary—into their lives. A host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild followed, all of whom knew her as 'Mee-Moo.'
Elva found joy in creating a warm, welcoming home filled with love, good food, and treasured memories. She was an extraordinary homemaker. She was a prodigious and masterful quilter, crafting unique and beautiful quilts for each of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchild. Over her lifetime, she prepared innumerable delicious meals for her family, including much beloved Mee-Moo staples like 'Chicken And Glup,' fried apples, and every conceivable type of pie.
Elva was a woman of deep faith and fellowship, serving as an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Midwest City and a founding member of the LOLs (little old ladies). She was known for her kindness, her hospitality, and her steadfast support of her family. She showed her love through her skilled handiwork and acts of loving kindness. In her later years, she maintained her independence and dependability, often driving younger friends to church well into her 80s.
Elva is survived by her four children, 11 grandchildren, and a growing number of great-grandchildren, all of whom carry forward her legacy of love and strength. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, husband, a grandson, Tyler Bural, and a great-granddaughter, Violet Scoggins.
Family will greet friends from 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Thursday, January 9, 2025 at the Mercer Funeral Home in Valley Falls. Private family burial will be at the Valley Falls Cemetery.
