Edward A. Brazda, 85, of Holton, KS passed away, Sunday, March 9, 2014, at Jackson County Medicalodge in Holton after a courageous 24 year battle with Multiple Sclerosis.
Edward was born October 17, 1928, in Timken, KS, the son of Adolph E. and Mary Ann (Serpan) Brazda. He graduated from Bison High in 1947. He proudly served in the United States Army from 1954 – 1956, during the Korean Conflict.
He received his Bachelors and Masters degrees at Fort Hays State University. He taught Biology at St. Marys of the Plains College in Dodge City. He attended and taught at Ball State University at Muncie, IN, as a Doctoral Fellow.
Edward farmed near Timken in Rush County. He later worked for the Kansas State Board of Agriculture as a special investigator for the Weed and Pesticide Division and retired after 19 years of service. He was also instrumental in the study of algae in the Cheyenne Bottoms and later co-wrote a book on that subject.
Edward was a member of the American Legion Post #44 in Holton and Disabled American Veterans.
He married Evelyn "Ann" Schuetz on August 30, 1949, in Bison, KS. She survives of the home. Other survivors include a son, Michael J. Brazda, Merriam, KS; a daughter, Mary A. Phillips (Ryan), Mayetta, KS; three grandchildren, Travis Holt (Jessica), Trevor Holt and Shelby Phillips and two great-grandchildren, Rylee and Tucker Holt. He was preceded in death by a sister, Velma Jane Walton.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 14, 2014, at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Family will greet friends one hour prior to service time.
