Edith Joan "Jan" Bell Scheidegger, 80, of Holton died Tuesday September 20, 2011 at her daughter's home. Jan was born December 2, 1930 in Canyon, TX, the daughter of Kenneth and Pearl Rouse Burum.


Jan was raised in Portland, OR. She had been in Holton since 1949. Jan was a homemaker, worked at Craigs IGA and was a Secretary for Bell Plumbing. Jan was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary and taught swimming lessons through American Red Cross.


Jan married Roy Bell in 1947 in Portland, OR. He preceded her in death on October 10, 1987. She married Charles Scheidegger in 1998. They later divorced. Jan is survived by her children, Carol and Rhett Totten of Holton, Ronnie and Deb Bell of Wilmington, IL, George and Nancy Bell of Rossville, KS, Barbara Diggs of Holton, KS and Brian and Karol Bell of Holton, KS; eleven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, Robert Burum.


Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday September 23, 2011 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. The family will greet friends from 6:30 to 7:30 Thursday evening at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Holton Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Jackson County Senior Center or Wounded Warrior Fund and left in c/o Mercer Funeral Home, P.O. Box 270, Holton, Kansas 66436
