Obituary

Doris Elizabeth (Highfill) Rose, 94, of Junction City, KS formerly of Holton, KS passed away Saturday January 12, 2013 at Chapman Valley Manor, Chapman, KS. She was born February 18, 1918 in El Dorado, KS the oldest of 2 daughters of Sam and Edyth (Braden) Highfill. She moved with her parents when she was 5 years old to Winfield, KS. She graduated from Winfield High School and from Southwestern College in Winfield with a degree in education. She taught 2nd grade for 3 years in El Dorado and married Malcolm (Jack) Rose on June 8, 1946 in Winfield, KS at her parent's home. They moved to Anthony, KS for a teaching position for Jack and then to Holton, KS where they lived for over 50 years until she relocated to Junction City.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and a sister, Leah Morton.

Her 2 children survive her, Leah (Rose) Cornelssen of Standard, CA and Bruce Rose with his wife, Carolyn of Junction City, KS; 4 grandchildren, Carrie (Cornelssen) Rosencrans, Kristi (Cornelssen) Foster, Charles Cornelssen and Lisa (Rose) Michalski; 5 great grandchildren, Alisha and Chad Foster, Aden and Maya Michalski and Tyler Cornelssen.

Doris was active in many organizations in Holton. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Unity Church Circle, Chapter P of P.E.O., Tourist Club, Bridge Club and was a teacher for the high school girls Sunday School Class. She was a member of the hospital auxiliary and was a Cub Scout den mother. She also was a substitute teacher at the Holton High School. In her retirement years she enjoyed toll painting and decoupage, traveling with her family, crossword puzzles and participating in the activities of her clubs.

On Saturday, January 19th, after a private burial the family will meet with friends at the United Methodist Church parlor in Holton for an informal celebration of Doris's life from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. A prayer and remembrances of her life will be at 2:00 p.m. Memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church or the Jack Rose Memorial Scholarship Fund for students graduating from Holton High School c/o Mercer Funeral Home, P.O.
