Donald Eugene VanDonge, 79, of Topeka, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence, Kansas. He was born October 11, 1946, in Soldier, Kansas, the son of Donald J. and Donna Gladys (Davis) VanDonge.

Don was a larger-than-life presence – fun, loving, and endlessly charismatic. He had a quick wit, an easy smile, and a laugh that could fill a room. Don never knew a stranger; within moments, anyone he met felt like an old friend. His humor, warmth, and unmistakable personality left lasting impressions on everyone he encountered. Family was Don’s greatest pride and joy. He deeply cherished his large, close-knit family and found his happiest moments surrounded by children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Whether it was family celebrations, casual get-togethers, or simply spending time together, Don lived for those moments of connection. He was a constant presence-supportive, affectionate, and always ready with a joke, a hug, or a word of encouragement.

A 1964 graduate of Soldier High School, Don proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. His strong work ethic and resourceful nature earned him the reputation of a true “jack of all trades.” Over the years, he worked as an Insurance Agent, Real Estate Agent, and self-employed Landlord. Don was an active member of the American Legion.

One of his greatest joys was entertaining others, and he was especially known for his love of karaoke and a huge Elvis enthusiast – bringing laughter, nostalgia, and smiles wherever he went.

Don married Shirley A. Pfeifer, and though they later divorced after 32 years of marriage, together they built a family that remained the center of his life. On November 2, 2013 he married Eva (Roy) Dean, with whom he shared love, companionship, and many happy years. She survives at the home.

Those left to treasure his memory include his wife, Eva VanDonge; his children, Michelle Carney-Horst (Vince) of Overland Park, Kansas; Kim VanDonge of Topeka, Kansas; Melissa Gallegos (fiancé, William Montgomery) of Topeka, Kansas; Kristin Lockhart (Jason) of Perry, Kansas; and Kurtis VanDonge (Andie) of Topeka, Kansas; his step-son Chris Dean of Shawnee, Kansas; his sister, Delores Beam of Circleville, Kansas; his brother, Danny VanDonge (Shirley) of Havensville, Kansas; two step-brothers; 27 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren, all of whom were deeply loved and adored by him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Donna VanDonge; two sisters, Daisy Howe and Dianna Wilson; a brother, Dennis VanDonge; one step-brother; and a beloved grandson, Seth Carney.
