DARREL EUGENE CHANCE
MAYETTA- On May 21, 2009, Darrel Eugene Chance went home to be with the Lord. He passed away at his rural Mayetta home surrounded by his family. Darrel was born May 28, 1935 to Ralph and Elsie (Bailey) Chance in Havensville, KS. As a young man, he was active in 4-H and FFA. He graduated from Seaman High School in 1953 and served in the US Army as a Communications Specialist in Germany from 1954-1956. He married Jeaneane Frey on March 27, 1960. She survives. Darrel and Jeaneane have 3 children: Allison Winter (Pat), DJ Chance (Kristi) and Lori Eck (Ken) all of Mayetta, and nine grandchildren: Cliff, Brooke, Ashley, Morgan, Bailey, Chase, Miles, Wyatt and Blake.
Darrel worked for the US Postal Service, retiring in 1997 after 37 years of service. He proudly owned and operated Darrel's Boot, Saddle and Leather Repair for 25 years and enjoyed serving all his customers. Darrel was an active member of the Mayetta Christian Church where he was a board member for several years, also serving as president.
Darrel loved working hard on the farm and he especially enjoyed raising and working cattle with his son, DJ. He was a lifetime member of the American Angus Assn. and a member of the Kansas Livestock Assn.
Darrel also enjoyed spending time with his wife and family, including his brothers and sisters and their spouses: Bob and Lee Chance, Guymon, OK; Jim and Edna Chance, Topeka, KS; Maylene and Harold Williams, Lakin, KS; Linda and Jim Davis, Topeka, KS; and Brenda and Tim Davis, CO Springs, CO.
Darrel will lie in state beginning Friday at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton, KS where his family will greet friends from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Monday evening. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at the funeral home with Pastor Gerald Haney presiding. Interment will be in Prairie Home Cemetery in Topeka.
The Chance family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials contributions be made to Holton Community Hospice c/o Mercer Funeral Home, Box 270, Holton, KS 66436. Darrel was a devoted husband, father, brother and friend. Though he is gone from our presence, he will forever live in our hearts.
