Dale Albert Garinger
Dale Albert Garinger, 74, Ozawkie, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2006, surrounded by family at home.
Mr. Garinger retired as a project engineer for Farmland Industries in Kansas City, Mo. He had previously worked for FarMarCo in Hutchinson and C.E. Ehrsam in Abilene and the Herrmann Company in Kansas City.
He was born Sept. 24, 1932 in Salina, the son of Albert Leslie and Edna Lenora White Garinger. A graduate of Salina High School, he attended Kansas State Agricultural School. He married Clede Ann Krauss on Aug. 14, 1955, in Holland, Kan., and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at their home near Ozawkie last summer. The couple moved to Jefferson County in 2001.
He was diagnosed with ALS in October of 2005 and told his children of the diagnosis saying, "This is not what I would have chosen, but it is the hand I have been dealt and I will play it." He adapted to each change brought on by the disease with courage and good humor. Even a few days before his death, his smile continued to brighten the lives of those around him.
Mr. Garinger was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Valley Falls, the Meriden Kiwanis Club and the Meriden Antique Engine and Threshers Association. He had served as a 4-H leader in Wyandotte, Dickinson, and Reno counties.
Survivors include his wife Clede; a daughter, Susan Massy, and her husband David, Lenexa; two sons, Steven Garinger, Lawrence, and Ned Garinger and his wife Karlene, Tempe, Ariz.; a sister, Jeanette Prewett, Shepherd, Mich., and five grandchildren: Erika and Caitlyn Massy, Laura Garinger, and Nate and Kenna Garinger.
Mr. Garinger donated his body for research into ALS through the University of Kansas Medical Center.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 7, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Valley Falls.
