Charles Steven Schirmer, 59, of Holton, KS passed away May 20, 2009 at Holton Community Hospital. He was born November 5, 1949 in Holton, the son of David E. and Ellen Hoppas Schirmer. Charles graduated from Holton High School in 1967, attended Kansas State University and graduated from Fort Hays University in 1972. He played football all four years at Holton High School, red shirt for 2 years at Kansas State University and played 2 years at Fort Hays University.
Charles was a farmer and stockman, worked for Oldhams in Holton for 22 years and later worked for C.J. Foods in Bern. He was a member of the St. Dominic Catholic Church in Holton, a member of the Jackson County Fair Board, a member of the Knights of Columbus, a past member and president of Jaycees of Holton and had a love for all sports.
He married Susan E. Schmitz on July 7, 1984 in Holton. She survives. Other survivors include his mother Ellen Schirmer of Holton, KS; 2 daughters, Kaylee Schirmer of Manhattan, KS and Deandra Schirmer of the home; a foster daughter, Melissa Kent-Walker of Golden, TX; a sister, Mary Schirmer Estrada of Topeka, KS; a brother, Henry Schirmer of Holton, KS and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his father David Schirmer on September 17, 2005.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 23, 2009 at St. Dominic Catholic Church. A rosary will be recited 6:00 p.m. Friday evening at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton with visitation to follow. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
