Obituary

Bernice C. Smith, 96, Holton, died Sunday, Jan. 29, 2012, at a Holton care facility.

She was born on April 17, 1915, at Soldier, the daughter of Loyd E. and Clara Jane Hedrick Akright. Bernice had attended Birmingham Grade School and graduated from Denison Rural High School. She later graduated from Washburn University.

Bernice was a farm wife and a school teacher, teaching for 39 years in communities in Jackson and Nemaha Counties. She loved her students as if they were her own and often participated in the games they played. At an early age she joined the Denison Christian Church and later became a member of the First Christian Church in Holton.

She married Ernest Laurence Smith on June 5, 1943, at Holton. He died on Sept. 15, 1981. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Vera Fern Singer, on March 29, 1999. Survivors include two brothers, Richard Akright, of Circleville, and Cecil Akright (Jean), of Wichita.

Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012, at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial will follow at the Holton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until service time Thursday. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church in Holton, the Circleville Christian Church or to Holton Community Hospital Hospice c/o Mercer Funeral Home, PO Box 270, Holton, KS 66436.
