Obituary

Alice Louise (Vawter) Slater, 99, of Holton, KS passed away March 14, 2013 at Medicalodge Jackson County. She was born October 14, 1913 in Wakarusa, KS the daughter of Clarence D. and Leola Pearl (Bixby) Vawter.

Mrs. Slater had lived in the Holton community since 1936. She owned and operated with her husband Slater Shoe Repair. She also worked for Slimaker Dress Factory; she was a dealer for Stanley Home Products and worked for various restaurants in Holton.

She was a member of the Holton Hospital Auxiliary, American Baptist Women and a 50 year member of the First Baptist Church of Holton.

Mrs. Slater married Morris Leonard Slater on July 10, 1932 in Topeka, KS. He preceded her in death on November 10, 1991. She was also preceded in death by sisters, Haroldine Ransdell Blumberg and Virginia Reaser, one brother Clarence "Bud" Vawter, and a son-in-law Eldon Shafer.

Survivors include 3 daughters, Marjorie Shafer of Bella Vista, AR, Doris Knutsen (Lowell) of Waverly, KS and Wilma Hood (Tom) of Punta Gorda, FL; 2 sons, Morris Slater (Ellen), Jr. of Aurora, CO and Larry Slater (Terry) of Mayetta, KS; a brother, Russel Vawter of Wakarusa, KS; 19 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren and 19 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 21, 2013 at the First Baptist Church in Holton. Burial will be in the Holton Cemetery. Family will greet friends from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Memorials may be given to the First Baptist Church c/o Mercer Funeral Home, P.O.
