Albert Wayne Stahl's Obituary

Holton- Albert Wayne Stahl, 86, of Holton, KS passed way January 18, 2010 at Medicalodges Jackson County in Holton. He was born June 10, 1923 in Holyrood, KS the son of Albert and Corinne Bacon Stahl. He graduated from Fairview Rural High School in 1948. He had lived in Holton since 1984 and had previously lived in Topeka, California and Nevada.
He served in the United States Army during World War II. Albert made the Bataan Death March in 1942; he then spent the next 40 months in Japanese P.O.W. camps in the Philippines and Japan. He had worked for the Federal Civil Service at the Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, Nevada, retiring in 1969.
He was a past member of the First Christian Church in Holton. He was a member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post #1367, and American Legion Post #44 both of Holton. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, the American Ex-Prisoners of War and the Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor. He also was a volunteer at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Topeka.
Albert married Betty M. Mercer on September 11, 1981 in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include six step-grandchildren and ten step-great grandchildren all of California; and cousins, Bob, Rob and Karl Steele of Falls City, NE.
Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial will be in the Holton Cemetery with full military honors by Nine Man Brigade from Fort Riley.
