M ercer Funeral Home purchased the Nellis Funeral Home in Valley
Falls in 1996 from Norman and Nancy Nellis. The home, built in 1928
by the Albert Shuler family, and later owned by Bert and Helen Hagge,
had more living space added in 1974 and a chapel in 1982. A part of
historic Valley Falls for over 100 years (the Shuler mortuary service
was originally located downtown), the funeral home serves communities
in Jefferson County. Chris and Tracy Mercer are now the owners.
Jim and Carol Braum and their family moved into the home in 1997.
Jim received a B.A. degree in Biblical Studies in 1974 from Geneva
College and an Associate in Applied Science in 1997 from Kansas City
Kansas Community College. Prior to that, he was in partnership with
his father on the family farm south of Denison, Kansas. He is
President of the Valley Falls Cemetery Association and past President
of the Valley Falls Chamber of Commerce and Valley Falls Rotary Club.
He is also a member of the Kansas Funeral Directors Association and
serves as an elder at the Denison Bible Church.
Carol occasionally assists at the funeral home but spends her
days as media specialist at Holton High School. Jim and Carol have
most recently enjoyed being grandparents.
